Conditions and concerns: finding an appropriate route to help

Explore family-support questions around alcohol, drugs, mental health changes and overlapping concerns. Start with appropriate assessment, not assumptions.

The aim here is to help you understand how to seek appropriate support, not to diagnose a condition or recommend a treatment from a description online.

Alcohol and drug concerns.

Start with the alcohol intervention and addiction intervention guides. Prepare a factual account and discuss medical assessment where dependence, withdrawal, intoxication, or overlapping health needs may be relevant. Do not assume suddenly stopping a substance is safe.

Changes in mental health.

Concern about mood, sleep, behavior, anxiety, or unusual experiences calls for appropriate assessment. A family conversation is different from an emergency assessment. Read the mental health intervention guide and the focused page on bipolar-related family concerns.

Overlapping needs.

Substance use, physical health, medication, and mental health may affect the same person. Ask how a provider assesses the whole situation, who participates, and when another service is required. A single label does not establish the correct setting.

Specialist circumstances.

Eating disorders, pregnancy and postpartum concerns, adolescents, and complex physical-health needs require suitable specialist pathways. Do not infer that an adult private residential program suits every condition or age group.

Prepare for a consultation.

Write down observations, current concerns, existing clinicians, relevant medication information, and the individual’s priorities. Ask what assessment is needed, what alternatives exist, and which warning signs require urgent local care.

Consider support around care.

Family guidance, treatment navigation, and continuing-care coordination address practical difficulties without replacing clinical care.
